Illuminated signs can be appropriate downtown if they respect the proportions of the storefront and the guidelines of this section. Properly done, illuminated signs can greatly enhance a business after dark and attract customers during the evening hours.

  1. The light source for signs should be designed as part of the sign or hidden from view.

  2. Lighting should have true color rendition.

  3. Avoid exposed lights which produce glare.

  4. Avoid exposed electrical fixtures and conduit or wire. If this is not possible, design as part of the sign or paint to match background.

  5. Internally lit signs are most effective that light letters on a dark opaque background.

  6. Exposed neon letters can also be effective, adding color and vitality to the street.
