This facility represents
the culmination of the foresight of the previous City
Administration and the determination of the present
City Administration to provide safe, high quality water
for the citizens of our community.
The city depends on the water from deep sandstone aquifers.
There are currently four wells at an average of 1,200
feet deep which produce the city's average daily demand
of 2.4 million gallons. The water supply contains an
elevated level of radium as well as hardness, and total
dissolved solids.
After careful evaluation of all of the water treatment
options available for the removal of radium, the City
selected Reverse Osmosis Membrane Filtration Treatment.
For reasons based on cost and operational flexibility,
the city's daily usage is produced at two treatment
facilities, one here at the Central Plant and one at
Well 10 site.
Each treatment unit will generate a permeate or processed
clean water stream of the raw water stream. They will
also produce a concentrate waste of 125 gallons per
minute, which is discharged by permit to the Fox River.
The new treatment process greatly
improves the City's water quality and allows the City
to comply with clean water regulations.
