The City of Ottawa, a growing community of 20,000 residents in North Central Illinois, 75 miles southwest of Chicago, IL. is seeking a Deputy Fire Chief. The Ottawa Fire Department is a progressive Fire/EMS department, fully paid 28-member municipal department servicing a 7 square mile fire suppression and 90+ square mile EMS area, with a $3 million annual budget and average call volume of 3300+ calls annually.
Requirements: Preference will be given to persons with demonstrated creative, and successful management ability in fire suppression, advanced life support emergency response, hazardous materials, incident management, fire service training, code enforcement, annual budget preparation, experience in labor relations, team building and fire master planning.
Qualifications: A minimum of an Associate’s degree in Fire Science or Fire Administration and Illinois Certified Fire Officer II or equivalent. A Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration and/or National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Graduate, and/or Illinois Certified Fire Officer III preferred. Demonstrated commensurate work experience may be considered in lieu of educational experience. The successful candidate shall have demonstrated success in all areas of command, have experience in a union department, possess a minimum of five (5) years of progressive responsible management experience including both fire suppression and EMS delivery, excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000 commensurate with qualifications includes a competitive benefits package. Residency within the corporate limits of the City of Ottawa is required unless the candidate is already residing within five (5) miles of corporate limits.
